Iberia Maintenance is working intensively to overhaul a total of 46 IAG Group and third party customers airplanes and their engines for the summer season. Out of these, 29 aircraft are from Iberia Group’s A320 family, 23 for Iberia and 6 for Iberia Express. A clear sign of the reactivation of operations for the summer season, which involves the meticulous attention and overhaul of the aircraft and engines after more than a year on the ground due to the reduction of air activity during the pandemic. In this period, Iberia Maintenance has assisted more than 150 aircraft by offering preservation services in Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Seville.

Several days of work are required for an aircraft to be operational again, according to the maintenance programmes of each operator. On the one hand, the covers that protect the aircraft against external agents such as insects, birds or corrosion are removed. On the other hand, engines, systems such as hydraulics, electrical or avionics, and essential elements such as the landing gear, brakes and wheels are checked, among other tasks.  In some aircraft, it will also be necessary to carry out heavy maintenance work at the Iberia Maintenance facilities in La Muñoza, as the aircraft’s entry into service coincides with the recurrent overhaul scheduled for the aircraft.

Passenger seats are back again

At the end of 2020, Iberia converted three Iberia Airbus A330s into freighters in order to adapt to the new market situation and take advantage of all opportunities, diversify its revenue streams and continue to generate activity for its employees while air demand recovered. With these three Airbus A330s expected to be needed in the coming weeks, Iberia Maintenance is already working on converting these three aircraft back to their original configuration, reinstalling the passenger seats so that by June, all three aircraft will be operating with passengers rather than cargo.
